CHANDIGARH: Twelve days after their marriage, the Jewli panchayat has barred Omvir and Saroj from entering their village for life. The ban means the couple can't ever visit their parents, till their land or walk through the panchayat land. Their fault: On December 10, they got married despite belonging to 'different sub-castes/gotras'. The Jewli panchayat, to which Omvir belongs, questioned the marriage — he being a Punia shouldn't have married a Sheoran girl.
Jewli is dominated by Sheorans, and they think the girl, who — though from another village — was like their daughter and shouldn't have been married into the Punia community.
The decision was taken by a 10-member panchayat samiti nominated on Friday to put an end to the issue. The panchayat also asked the complainant to immediately withdraw criminal cases registered against five people from the Sheoran gotra. When contacted by TOI, Omvir said: "We don't agree with the decision and will seek government's help."At present, Omvir, his father Hawa Singh Punia, and Saroj are staying at his (Omvir's) maternal uncle's place since December 10, when the marriage took place. Omvir's mother is staying alone in Jewli under heavy police security.
Bhiwani SP Subhash Jadhav said: "The law and order situation is under control. Policemen are present at the village and there is no likelihood of any untoward incident." Earlier, when Sheorans came to know of the proposed marriage in October, they immediately asked Hawa Singh to drop the idea. Sources say while at that time Hawa Singh had agreed he would not go ahead with the marriage, the family then organised a marriage ceremony in a hush-hush manner. A week later, the panchayat ostracised the Punias.
